Picky and well…kind of greedy…

I am watching HGTV. Right now it is an episode of House Hunters. Earlier, it was Location Location Location. I like these shows, getting a close up view of how other people live, what their homes look like, how they decorate, etc. Maybe I’ve watched it all too much because I’m now getting sick of these greedy people. Nothing is good enough. My husband has always thought that I would be a good real estate agent, I’ve always said no because I’m not a sales person – now, I would say NO because I can’t imagine dealing with such greedy, picky people.

One couple on Location, Location, Location had a list of 34 criteria in looking for the home they wished to buy for approx. $1million pounds. Granted, if I was spending $1 million, I’d want it to meet certain criteria as well but these two!? forget it! Nothing was good enough.

The couple on House Hunters – just really bugged me. Perfectly lovely homes (in St. Louis) and the woman – she hated everything and stated “I could not live with this kitchen!” Give me a break lady! I don’t know, all I could think of is the people who have no home and no kitchen and she was being so ridiculous about the kitchen. The first house they were shown, she refuse to look at the whole thing and ruled it out completely before seeing anything else.

Like I said, of course if you are paying that kind of money you want to get the best you can for it but it all struck me as so incredibly excessive and selfish. I’ve been thinking about and praying for the people in Haiti and in Pakistan and elsewhere in the world who are destitute and grateful for anything and contrasting that with the greed and excess of the western way of life was just plain offensive to me.

Yes – I am guilty – no doubt about it. I live in a 3 bdrm rented townhouse and yes I’m typing this on a laptop connected to hi speed internet. We make payments on 2 relatively new vehicles, we have more than enough of everything and often wish for more. Many of us are self absorbed and over indulged and there are people in true poverty and desperation who could use a very small percentage what we have – what we spend on coffee or gum every week.

I guess I should not be too hard on the couples that I mentioned earlier, they want it all and it’s really not my place to judge them, they can spend their money any way they want to. Rather than pointing fingers, I guess I should look at myself and see what I can do to help those in need, whether it is in Haiti or right here in my own neighborhood, city or country. The truth is, we don’t have to look far to find others in need and when it comes to those who are able to help, it is often as clear as the nose on our face….

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27 NIV

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31: 8,9 NIV
